History on Arran – one day itinerary

Here’s what we’d do to get a taste of Arran’s history if we only had one day.

Remember to check opening hours before you travel – some of these recommendations have seasonal opening hours.

Morning

  • Head over the hill to Brodick Castle and Country Park. Explore this grand baronial castle, which has a long and rich history, including connections to royalty and notable figures. You could also enjoy a coffee at the cafe here.
  • Then make your way through to Corrie. Make a stop (and perhaps take a dip!) in the iconic Doctor’s bath.

Dr. McCredy had this bath cut into the sandstone on the shore in 1835 to treat his patients with seawater therapy. Look for a layby on the left, opposite a house with red railings. You’ll find the exact location on Google Maps.

Afternoon

  • Drive up to Lochranza castle. Visit the ruins of this castle dating from the late 1200s, which played a role in Arran’s Viking past and later medieval history. Imagine being thrown in the pit prison or hit with an arrow through the murder hole!
  • Before you leave Lochranza, make a pit stop at The Sandwich Station to grab a homemade lunch. The focaccia here is divine.
  • Next, head over to the standing stones at Machrie Moor. Explore the iconic stone circles and other prehistoric remains at Machrie Moor, including the 5-meter high sandstone pillars.
  • Finally, visit the Arran Heritage Museum to explore the island’s social history, including the Highland Clearances.

Evening

  • On your way back to the hut, you could call into The Drift Inn for an evening meal. The food here is exceptional. The pub overlooks the Holy Isle which has an ancient spiritual heritage stretching back to the 6th century.
