Why autumn is the best time to visit Arran
The season is turning and the island is slowing down. Here are our top reasons why autumn can be the best time to visit.
Summer crowds have gone home
The beaches, hills and island amenities feel more peaceful. So you’re more likely to:
- have the beach to yourself – especially in places like Whiting Bay and further south
- nab a table or a takeaway at Arran’s best eateries (French Fox and Blackwater Bakehouse I’m looking at you!)
- enjoy a swim at Auchrannie without getting attacked by a kid with a pool noodle
The landscape and the colours are even more spectacular
From the heather and the bracken, to the moody seas. Arran has some of the most beautiful landscapes in autumn. We particularly recommend:
- walks at Merkland woods
- a visit to Brodick Castle where you can find a cozy shelter at the estate’s Bavarian acorn-lined hut
- dramatic sunsets on the west side of the island
It’s a busy time for wildlife
As the island is quiet, wildlife is easier to spot. We recommend keeping an eye out for:
- red squirrels preparing for winter – visit Eas Mor forest to see them in action
- deer during the rutting season – Lochranza is the best place to hear them in action (trust us, you can’t miss them!)
- seals around the coastline on the way to Corrie
- migrating birds – from the frozen north, we start to welcome birds like redwings, fieldfares and purple sandpipers
Oh – and the midges have made their departure!
Feel less pressure to fill your days
Autumn gives us the opportunity to slow down and coorie in. We recommend a stay in one of our shepherd’s huts to enjoy slow activities like:
- journaling and crafting
- puzzles
- reading that book that’s been on your tbr pile for far too long
- making a start on a creative project
- stargazing from the comfort of your cosy bed
